Terrapin has been supplying AFP font solutions since 1988. AFP is the world-renowned printing architecture from IBM (now InfoPrint Solutions Company) and is the recognised choice of many companies for processing customer facing documents in a production environment.

Historically, AFP fonts have been supplied as bitmap (aka raster) fonts for IBM AFP printers. If bitmap fonts are supplied, then the resolution is either 240 or 300 dpi.  The resolution of the fonts should match the resolution capability of the target printer, for maximum print quality.

Newer hardware and software can now utilise AFP Outline fonts, which are basically Type 1 PostScript fonts with an AFP wrapper.  These fonts provide resolution independence as they are scaled according to the resolution of the printer.

Some advanced Document Composition systems can handle Outline fonts (TrueType, Type1, OpenType) natively, and all font resources to drive the AFP printers are generated “on the fly” and embedded to travel inline with the AFP job.

Our font solutions are compatible with all major Document Composition systems:

  • DOC1
  • Thunderhead
  • CSF
  • Amdocs Designer
  • HP Dialogue
  • Papyrus
  • Sefas Open Print Designer
  • Crawford PRO Production Manager
  • EMC Document Sciences xPression

AFP  fonts are supplied with the following files:

AFP Bitmap
C0 - Character Set - contains the character bitmaps and metric information
T1 - Code Page - Maps each character to a unique EBCDIC Hexadecimal position
X0 - Coded Font - Links a character set and a code page to form a font

AFP Outline
CZ - Character Set - contains the character vectors and metric information
T1 - Code Page - Maps each character to a unique EBCDIC Hexadecimal position
XZ - Coded Font - Links a character set and a code page to form a font

Licensing
Font licensing for AFP font solutions can be arranged through us.  Some font manufacturers supply an AFP license extension.

An AFP license will be required if you are producing high volume transactional documents (Statements, Invoices, etc).

If the fonts are being used, for example for a high volume letter mailer, then a standard user license will suffice to cover the number of workstations being used.

We are continually working with the font manufacturers to ensure that end users are properly licensed.  The costs for AFP licenses depend on number of servers and workstations that have access to the fonts for creating and amending documents.
